Circleville Pumpkin Show officially underway

CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio (WTVN)-- It's a tradition that goes back over 100 years in Circleville, called "The Greatest Free Show on Earth." The Circleville Pumpkin Show attracts hundreds of thousands of people over a four-day run, beginning Wednesday.

Several blocks of the city are set up for food, rides, games, and anything you could think of made of pumpkin. Some of the more popular items include pumpkin burgers, pumpkin donuts, pumpkin fudge, pumpkin pizza, pumpkin ice cream, and pumpkin milkshakes.

There's at least one parade a day through the city every day, with a Little Miss Pumpkin Show and Miss Pumpkin Show named every year. Other contests throughout the week are a pumpkin toss, hog calling contest, and parade float judging.

Lindsey's Bakery in Circleville also bakes the World's Largest Pumpkin Pie every year, to be put on display throughout the show. Lindsey's Bakery Owner Katie Miller ran down the list of ingredients for the large pie, "96 pounds of cooked pumpkin, 44 pounds of granulated sugar, 16 gallons of milk, 15 dozen eggs, 4 pounds corn starch, 24 ounces of pumpkin spice, 24 ounces of salt, and 36 pounds of pie dough."

She says at the end of the show every year, a group of farmers uses it to feed their hogs, which will last at least 15 or 20 head.

The 107th Pumpkin Show runs through Saturday in Circleville, about 30 miles south of Columbus.
